Our Troop 14 summer trip this year was to Maine. The older scouts went on a big
canoe trip with Maine High Adventure. The
scouts too young to go on this trip went to a campsite in Maine called Camp
Roosevelt. We drove there and met with some camp staff at the mess hall
before going to our campsite, Camp Snow Shoe.
The week started with an opening ceremony in
which the staff told ghost stories by the fire. A spooky start to the week
but not nearly as terrifying as what they would encounter throughout the
week... The horse flies. They were each a inch long and you knew if they bit
you.
The campsite was large and pretty rocky. The
mess hall was big and was right next to the parking lot. There was
also a lake for fishing and water sports, a shooting range and other areas
dedicated to various merit badges.
Each day the scouts woke up and went to the mess
hall for breakfast. All the meals at Roosevelt were similar with lots of
singing songs and chants. After breakfast the scouts would go work on a
merit badge or two before lunch. Then another one or two merit badges
before diner. After dinner all the scouts would go back to their campsites.
